The Soda Stand

Back in 1989, my brother introduced to some people he had been “chatting” with on this thing called a BBS. At the time, I thought it was the geekiest shit ever. I was working at Odyssey Records and I was way too cool a chica for those people.

He took me to a party at someone’s house and we were playing some game.. and the little thing ended up on this awning. One of the guys climbed up there to get it. I was hooked on these people.

I signed up as Pooky for my first nickname. I changed it shortly thereafter to Sodapop. I’ve had this nickname for so long, it’s just weird. People have shortened it to Soda or Sodie over the years, which is fine.

The BBS opened my mind to chat rooms and eventually the internet. Bulletin Board System is what I found out later it meant. I garnered some awesome friendships from the BBS days. I recently just got in touch with some of them again. It was actually last Memorial Day weekend when I was online and found them all on Myspace.

I have so many fond memories of those days. We were all such a close knit group of friends. It’s awesome rebuilding those friendships and getting know the people they have become.

Some of them have not changed at all, while some of us have changed significantly. We sometimes meet at the park on Saturday evenings. It’s what we used to do every week for years.

It’s quite funny because on the “group” on MySpace, some of us don’t know real names, we just remember the “handle” or nickname. Several of the people have their real names on their profiles and then ask me for a friend request. WTF. I don’t know your real name, give me a handle. LOL It’s funny because I’ve ended up denying quite a few requests and then find out later that it’s a Multi Comm (the name of the BBS) person. So funny.
